Product development strategy for consumer brands

A product development strategy is the plan for what you will make, for whom, at what cost, and through which channel, decided before money is spent on production. Cydney Mar builds it into the Concept-to-Reality Pathway through Product Clarity and Cost & Margins, so the product is designed to be profitable from the start.

What is a product development strategy?

It is a short set of decisions that guide every later step: the problem and customer, the product range, the target price and cost, the suppliers you will use, and the launch channel. A good strategy makes the next step obvious and stops you from paying for work that a later decision would undo.

Worksheet

How do I calculate my product margin?

Use this worksheet to check whether one unit makes money before you commit to production. Enter your own figures; nothing is saved or sent anywhere. Cydney Mar's pathway asks founders to learn to calculate costs properly, and this is the first calculation to get right.

Assumptions: gross margin is (selling price minus landed cost) divided by selling price. Landed cost is manufacturing plus packaging plus freight and duty per unit. It leaves out marketing, returns, channel fees, and overhead. This is an estimate for planning, not financial advice.

Process consulting

Product development process consultants: why order matters

Product development process consultants focus on the sequence of work as much as the work itself. Cydney Mar's view is that most founders fail by taking the right steps in the wrong order, such as ignoring margins until it is too late. Her free Product Development Roadmap lays out what to do and what to avoid at each stage. See the product launch framework next, or return to the guide to product development consultants.

How do I calculate my product costs and margins?

Start with the full cost of one finished unit, including materials, labor, packaging, and freight, then compare it to your selling price. Gross margin is the selling price minus unit cost, divided by the selling price. Cost & Margins is stage four of Cydney Mar’s pathway, and this guide’s product development strategy page includes a simple margin worksheet to practice the math.

Why do product ideas waste money in development?

Most product ideas do not fail because the idea is bad; they fail because the right steps happen in the wrong order. Common mistakes Cydney Mar sees include jumping into sampling without clarity, choosing suppliers based on guesswork, ignoring margins until it is too late, and trying to figure it out along the way. Each one costs time and money.
